HISTORY
Centro
was founded in June of 1972 in Cornelius, Oregon by settled out Mexican-American
migrant families who, weary of the difficulties of raising their children
on the migrant circuit, decided to band together seeking each other companionship
and support. They channeled their dreams, talents and struggles into the
creation of an organization working to create a Latino community strong
in justice, human dignity, empowerment and self-sufficiency through education
and job training.
The Latino population of the county has the fastest growing rate in the state. While the population in Washington County increased by 133,788 people, or 44% between 1990 and 2000, the Latino population in the county increased by 245% from 14,401 to 49,735 (US census data 1990, 2000)
