Parks and Nature Event Planner
Position Title: Parks and Nature Event Planner
Deadline to apply: March 30, 2018 @ 5:00 PM, PDT
Salary: $57,678.40 – $77,334.40 annually
This limited-duration position, which is funded by an operating levy, will run through June 30, 2023. The position is eligible for benefits.
Are you a talented event planner who loves the outdoors and knows how to connect with diverse communities? Then you might be a great candidate to help shape a new role as Metro's Parks and Nature Event Planner.
You should have experience planning, organizing and executing fun, creative events that help an organization to achieve its mission. In our case, that means protecting clean water, preserving healthy fish and wildlife habitat, and connecting people with nature close to home. Metro manages 17,000 acres of parks, natural areas and historic cemeteries across the greater Portland area, from the Chehalem Mountains on the west to the Sandy River Gorge on the east.
As the Parks and Nature Event Planner, you would be in charge of annual events such as Salmon Homecoming at Oxbow Regional Park, a new community history fair at Lone Fir Cemetery and a networking fair for trails professionals. You would also plan groundbreaking and grand opening celebrations for new Metro destinations, helping deliver on our commitment to operate safe, welcoming places and build a sense of community. Because Metro's parks events have been planned by a variety of staff across multiple work teams, we're eager for the new Parks and Nature Event Planner to develop a consistent approach, evaluate the success of each event and develop criteria for prioritizing events. The event planner will also lead our strategy for tabling at community-hosted events like festivals and markets, with an emphasis on the summer season. You would guide the day-to-day work of a seasonal staffer who coordinates and hosts our outreach booth.
The ideal candidate for the Parks and Nature Event Planner position will bring fresh ideas, love exploring new places and excel at leading project teams. Your creativity should be matched by strong attention to detail -- from tracking budgets to working with vendors. The new event planner should also have experience working cross-culturally to design events alongside community members, and commitment to providing a welcome experience for all people who visit Metro's parks. This person will play a key role in our commitment to opening the doors to nature for people who have often been shut out, including communities of color and low-income communities.
As the Parks and Nature Event Planner, you would collaborate with talented staff across Metro's Parks and Nature Department -- from volunteer coordinators to nature educators, from parks and natural areas planners to park rangers. Your home base will be with the Parks and Nature Communications Team, a diverse group that gets a lot done, learns from one another, has fun and loves making a difference. Our team works together to build awareness and trust in Metro's park system, and give the community a voice in its future.
At least two years of professional experience doing event planning and/or community engagement; and a Bachelor's degree in communications, marketing, parks and recreation or related field; or any combination of education and experience that provides the knowledge, skills and abilities required to perform the job.
• Experience tailoring events to large public groups including diverse, culturally specific or underserved communities is required.
• Valid driver's license and good driving record, with ability to load and drive Metro vehicle to events is required.
• Demonstrated interest and/or experience with parks and natural areas is preferred.
