Stormwater Mural Project | Projecto de Mural de Calle
Oregon Metro Placemaking Project

*This page is bilingual | Esta pagina es bilingüe*

Calling all artists! Paid opportunity to make a street mural
Non-profit community organizations Centro Cultural and Tualatin Riverkeepers are calling on creative local artists to design and paint an environmental street mural in Hillsboro. The art should be focused on the value of water conservation and the threat of pollution from ‘stormwater’.

Stormwater runoff is generated from rain that flows over land or paved streets, parking lots, and building rooftops, and does not soak into the ground. This runoff picks up pollutants like trash, chemicals, oils, and dirt/sediment that can harm our rivers and streams. The Tualatin River and its streams are located in Washington County and development such as the above threatens water quality. It is hoped that the mural will draw attention to the need to think of the Tualatin River and its waterways as well as the need to value trees and vegetation that help filter toxins from roadways.

In addition to this environmental theme, it is hoped that the mural will depict the value of water to the Latino community and can also incorporate elements of water in countries from the Latin American diaspora, in addition to Oregon.  Ideally the artist should have a background in community work or art education and we are open to painting proposals that leave space for children to paint next to the artist.

Commission for design and paint of art: $2,000 (including materials)

Artists should prepare a half page to 1 page proposal detailing what they would like to paint on the concrete along with any other messaging relevant by October 15th, 2017.

Please send proposals to Sandra@tualatinriverkeepers.org. Additionally, Centro Cultural will be holding a community meeting in Hillsboro at their Centro de Prosperididad in mid-October to discuss more. Please give your email and phone number in the proposal so that we may keep informed.

Six projects will pilot Metro’s Community Placemaking program
The winning grants support conventional and progressive placemaking projects that demonstrate a commitment to racial equity by both established and emerging organizations. Read more about why these projects rose to the top. In the coming weeks Metro will feature profiles of the organizations and their placemaking projects.

Metro received 53 applications from around the region for the pilot cycle of Community Placemaking grants. Applications were reviewed in two rounds by an external advisory group who assessed alignment with the program's objectives, the involvement of and benefit to historically marginalized communities, meaningful community engagement, likely outcomes and impacts, and feasibility. Advisory group members have expertise in community development, social justice, public art and urban planning. The next cycle of Community Placemaking grants will open in early 2018.
